It’s all in the name: hustleGRL.
Karla “hustleGRL” Moy is a phenomenon. This bilingual teen prodigy has accomplished more in her 16 years than many have in their entire careers. Complete with vision (and the tools to execute) it’s nothing short of a gift to watch this young entrepreneur create what will one day undoubtedly be her own empire. With a passionate love for hip-hop and more importantly a dedication to home that has helped invigorate the local music scene, hustleGRL is a shining example of someone who puts city first and is an imperative piece to Toronto’s thriving new music market.
Born June 30th, 1992, hustleGRL represents a new generation of hip-hop. Born into the Internet she is proof that this new age of computer-bred minds is able to accomplish incredible things in such a short time. At age 10 she started designing and by 12 she was already charging people for her work. Self-taught at first and then taking guidance from some of the city’s best graphic designers through the coveted and respected youth program The Remix Project, hustleGRL has been able to see her work graduate from the streets to the boardrooms as she’s completed projects for local independent artists to major label acts signed to Universal Music.
Her client list also includes huge companies like clothing luminaries FCUK, Nelly Furtado’s management company Chris Smith Management (where she also interns), Canada’s #1 hip-hop website Hiphopcanada.com and future superstars like Famous and Drake. More than just a graphic designer though, Ms. Moy has an uncanny understanding of branding and has thus created the hustleGRL persona (perhaps the most remarkable thing about her). The hustleGRL brand is becoming one synonymous with terms like: new, exciting, fresh and innovative and when it comes to music, trustworthy. This is not an easy feat and having this type of elusive name brand recognition at such a young age is something corporate PR firms could only dream of.
Perhaps due to her strict upbringing (she comes from religious parents with strong family values), the lessons learned from her 4 brothers or her role as captain of her high school basketball team, hustleGRL boasts a work ethic that is foreign to many in her age bracket. She is focused, disciplined and determined and slips into the role of a leader with ease. Whether it be design, marketing, promotions, artist development or whatever path she decides to take her career one thing is for sure: she will bring the same ambition and execution that is synonymous with the hustleGRL name.
The hustle continues for Karla Moy. Despite her incredible achievements at such a young age she remains humble and is planning to attend Ryerson University’s leading Radio & Television Arts program upon completing high school. Yes, go back to the beginning of this bio…she’s 16 years old (!!!) and has shattered the professional expectations of people her age. From her online portfolio (hustlebility.net) to her personal blog (hustlegrl.com) she somehow continues to raise the bar while balancing the life pressures of her teenage years, maintaining good grades at school and staying true to her family obligations – more than enough for the regular girl but in this situation, it’s all in the name…
A wise man once said: “…but she is also a sweet, sweet girl, who seems to somehow smile through every day like nothing can knock her stride.“
